Module 2

This is the exploration process of alterations in light, colour, objects and their effect on the environment

Design Challenge 1

This is a photo of the Campus Store taken at B-Wing Alterations for this photo could be: highlighting and bolding the ‘onecard’ icon, so it is more outsanding and visible for students seeking help for the onecard; adding a campus map at the entrance and floor stickers for better wayfinding; adding two more stands with more visible advertisements of what is offered at the campus store for more customers; and ‘Need Help’ stands for students seeking help, which briefly linked to landscape theory where students can percieve instructions more clearly and be guided to the right direction for help This is a photo of G-Wing’s elevator leading to level 1 Alterations for this photo could be: Enlarging the map and poster to improve visibility and readability; adding more event posters on the wall to interact with students passing by; adding floor stickers to help support directional purposes; and adding more chairs for students to rest when tired, which is linked breifly with environmental psychology where students can be more engaed with the space and feel more connected with school events and locations This is another photo of G-Wing’s hallway, where the structure of tubes has a very interesting layout that catches my eyes Alterations for this photo could be: Adding more event posters for more interaction between students and the space; and adding some cool tone lights to create contrast between the warm light on left, making the overall environment artistic and unique, which is linked to environmental psychology where students' emotions can be affected by the lighting and colour of the space This is a photo of the hallway leading to dance classrooms taken in J-Wing Alterations for this photo could be: Adding more welcoming words on the blue structure to reinforce the location people are in; adding more trashcans or garbage bins for convenience; another cool idea would be if the open space near the left window area could be used for events; it’ll bring more students to J-Wing and improve the welcoming environment, which is linked to environmental psychology and a bit of landscape theory This is a photo of the hallway with students' artwork displayed in A-Wing Alterations for this photo could be: Adding text indications on the display boxes to help identify the author’s field of study and what year’s art is being displayed; Adding additional light near the outside of the display box, which can help draw attention to students’ art rather than just displaying them, which is linked to architecture psychology where students percieve artwork with direct lighting may be clearer for students to understand the artwork and connect with the space further This is a photo of the cafeteria in B-Wing, which is taken near Pizza Pizza Alterations for this photo could be: Changing the squared/sharp edged tables to rounded tables to create a welcoming sensation and be less dangerous for people passing by these tables; adjusting the bright, cool-toned light to warmer-tone light creates cosiness and inclusiveness, which is linked to environmental psychology of how shapes can also affect human behaviours and emotions This is a photo of the hallway near Print Garden and Student Gallery in AA-Wing Alterations for this photo could be: Hanging textile/woven artwork crafted by students on the ceiling to present AA-Wing’s uniqueness to better display students’ creative work completely when hanging on the wall, and creates interactions with the space; Displaying a 3D printer outside of ‘Print Garden’ shows the room’s purpose and attracts attention, which is linked to architecture psychology where different display of students' work in the space can bring different emotions for students and feel engaged with the space This is a photo of the side of the route to the second parking lot that’s near the Gym, where I always pass by when going for classes Alterations for this photo could be: Adding chair umbrellas to chairs would be really helpful when it’s suddenly raining or snowing for pedestrians, and can also be helpful in summer when the sun is too bright, and people are enjoying their time at the table; Adding an extra street light pole with warm-toned light improves visibility and safety at night; Adding another ‘Need Help’ poster at this open area so it’s safer for students walking alone; Adding another trashcan to reduce scattered waste and save people’s time for finding another trashcan for discarding trash, and this can be linked with environmental psychology and landscape theory This is a photo of the second parking lot that is near the Gym. It’s so important to me because I once got scammed around this area Alterations for this photo could be: Adding a License Plate Recognition system to help limit trespassing vehicles or threats of unknown vehicles present on campus; more instructions and guides at the entrance of the parking lot help give drivers a glance of what to do and not to do; Adding extra area indications so it can make life easier for drivers not knowing their directions; More trashcan to reduce random waste, which is linked to environmental psychology where students can feel more comfortable and safe when the environment has some sort of safety porcedures This is a photo of the walkway and metal bridge near the cafeteria and E-Wing Alterations for this photo could be: Adding wall illustrations on bare buildings to create more artistic vibe for school buildings; Changing the metal bridge to rock bridges to prevent constant repairs of the bridge, which can also add variation in scenery and better merge to the intended natural environment of this area, which is linked to environmental psychology where large illustrations can boost positive emotions and make students feel more engaged with the space, and the bridge can also be a safer option for students walking across the bridge This is a photo of the walkway outside of J-Wing connecting to AA-Wing Alterations for this photo could be: Adding a coloured glass shed on top of the walkway which creates beautiful and colourful reflections on the ground under sunlight, and also helps prevent sudden rain or snow weather for students walking outside, which is linked to environmental psychology where different colours may enlight students' feelings This is a photo of the main entrance of J-Wing Alterations for this photo could be: Changing the colour of the glasses on the outside window to blue, which can alter the plain dark glasses to be more colourful and add a professional vibe to J-Wing, and brighter coloured glasses can also enlighten the feelings of people, which again is more liked towrds environmental psychology This is a photo of one of the G-Wing’s classrooms, where I tried finding somewhere to put alterations but decided not to because the lighting is improved once the light goes on, and rounder tables actually improve inclusiveness, which is helpful for making engaging and welcoming environment
